Caleb recognized the young woman, surprised to see her participating in the tournament.[break][break]
"I guess she's inspired us both to do a little training, eh?"[break][break]
He grinned, taking out a Pokeball and releasing Lyra onto the grass. The Lapras trilled happily, pleased to be called upon, preening in the sunlight filtering through the park's small grove of trees. There were other battles taking place around them, the cheering and laughter of delighted fans mixed with trainers barking orders and Pokemon obeying. There was a certain thrill to the whole thing, Caleb had to admit.[break][break]

"Fair enough," Caleb laughed. How many hours had he wasted on paperwork, when his real potential was out in the field?[break][break]
Lyra regarded the Arbok with narrowed eyes, and Caleb sensed that she was ready to begin. They'd been partners for so long, he did not need to give the command. She knew what to do.[break][break]
His hand itched, and he felt displaced for a moment - lost in time. Flashes of Galar - a crown, a trident, hammered plate-armor weathered by war and sorrow.[break][break]
At first nothing happened, and then the rain began to fall. Light at first, then growing in strength. Lyra's eyes glowed a soft pearlescent blue as she attuned to the storm, gathering her sea-born energy. The RAIN DANCE would power up her next move, a jet stream of HYDRO PUMP.[break][break]

"Rain, huh?[break][break]

... Sumi! You know what that means, don't'cha!?"[break][break]

The Arbok slithers forward with an affirmative hiss. [break][break]

Venom drips from her fangs, and in the storm they flicker with sparks. A hint of lightning. [break][break]

She surges forth faster than eyes can see, and the resulting thunder is all that remains as a bolt strikes with her fangs. The ecstasy of a clean bite lasts only a second, however, as a Hydro Pump tosses her across the area. [break][break]

"Sumi!"[break][break]

She curls up and hisses angrily at the Lapras, rising tall to defend her master. [break][break]

Lyra shook off the THUNDER FANG, her hard, ice-cold shell resistant enough to protect her despite the conductivity of the falling rain. All the same, Caleb was impressed.[break][break]
"Clever," he lauded Tsubaki, blue eyes watching her with approval. "Unfortunately, Lyra's Shell Armor prevents critical hits." Under different circumstances, the electricity would easily have overcome a water type, but Lyra was an especially hearty water type.[break][break]
"Keep her there," Caleb ordered. The key to defeating a Pokemon as quick as Tsubaki's Arbok was to...well, freeze it in place.[break][break]
Lyra opened her mouth and conjured a powerful ICE BEAM aimed directly at Sumi.[break][break]

Sumire rears back, exposing the pattern on her belly. Beady eyes of a predator are filled with malevolence. As flashes of lightning and ethereal aurora borealis permeate the air, the Arbok's scales cast an illusion like the face is moving, enhanced by otherworldly light. She glares back in the face of the beast, hunger in her eyes. [break][break]

The GLARE momentarily stunned Lyra. The Lapras froze, enduring a taste of her own medicine. Then she shook her head, eyes clearing.[break][break]
"Nice one," Caleb admitted, nodding to Tsubaki. Then he tapped the Mega Accessory on his wrist, activating its power.[break][break]
Lyra began to glow, her form shifting - growing more massive, sparkling snowflakes dancing around her like twinkling stars. The temperature around Caleb grew several degrees colder, but he did not flinch away. He was used to Lyra's transformation, and how it affected the environment around her. He grinned, heart racing as the battle intensified.[break][break]
The Mega-Lapras shimmered, manifesting energy. Then she shot a super-powered DRAGON PULSE directly at the Arbok.[break][break]

Sumire darts forth, a blur as she crosses the gap between herself and the Mega Lapras. For all its bulk, it's given up on speed. [break][break]

But even a tank has its weak points.[break][break]

"... Crack it open like a shellfish!! Dragon tail!"[break][break]

The snake wreathes itself in ambient draconic energy, following through with all her momentum and smashing her tail against the mega evolved transport pokemon. It's a devastating blow, and the cracking sound that ripples through the air afterwards only adds to the cruelty behind it. [break][break]

An explosion of draconic force nearly knocked Caleb off his feet. He stumbled back, shielding his eyes. Dragon attack vs dragon attack. When the dust and debris cleared, Caleb watched Lyra stagger to the side, clearly worse for wear.[break][break]
"Damn, Tsubaki, that's a hell of an Arbok you've got," he whistled. He really hadn't expected this from the polite secretary. It seemed she had a fierce side to her he hadn't yet experienced in his dealings with freya morningstar.[break][break]
Luckily, Lyra's Mega Evolution was still in full effect. "Let's go, girl! You've got this!" He called out to her, trying to sound as encouraging as possible. She nodded her weary head to him, then gathered her resolve.[break][break]
Rain and snow fell around her, a glittering halo of ice crystals coalescing around her massive shell.[break][break]
Another ICE BEAM, more powerful than her previous one, blasted forth towards the Arbok.[break][break]

"Hah! Tryin' to throw us off by throwin' out compliments? ... You're not bad yourself."[break][break]

She says that, but the man's accomplished that whether he meant to or not. The air condenses rapidly as Tsubaki speaks. She can feel the chill in her lungs, and she shivers. Eyes darting to her treasured companion, she shouts--[break][break]

"Sumi, watch out--!"[break][break]

But the ice beam already flickers through the air, lighting their surroundings with aurora borealis. [break][break]

Ice freezes the snake's black scales, and she struggles against it, ripping apart the ice with sharp fangs and jaws that can crush rock. By the time she rips herself free, the moment to escape the next attack has passed... she stares up at the Lapras in defiance, hissing. [break][break]

In the end, they were fairly equally matched. Sumire's powerful jaws shattered the ice, which caused Lyra's eyes to widen in shock. In retaliation, the Lapras gathered a plethora of energy, the horn on her head glowing with a bright azure light. A DRAGON PULSE surrounded the Arbok, needle-like shards of ice flying in all directions.[break][break]
"You should train with me sometime," Caleb called out to Tsubaki. "Not Pokemon battling, but hand-to-hand combat. It's useful to be able to hold your own in a fight...in case your Pokemon can't help you for some reason."[break][break]
He wasn't entirely sure why he was offering to teach her. Maybe it had something to do with their shared investment in freya morningstar. Either way, if she was around on the mornings he trained with Freya and her dragons, he could spare a little extra time to show her a thing or two.[break][break]
It benefitted the region for everyone to be ready...for whatever disaster awaited them next.[break][break]

A draconic crown wreathes her treasured pokemon's head. Baki holds her terrastral orb to the sky. Brilliant light, and snake sheds her previous self, becoming what she longs to be. [break][break]

The serpent's black scales glimmer in terrastral light. She covers her body in blue flames, their aura enough to deflect the pulse of the Lapras' own draconic energy. She springs forth to deliver a frightening blow with her tail, cleaving the air in front of her.[break][break]

The Terastallization was enough: a draconic tail whip smacked Lyra across her great shell, cracking through the protective barrier of ice. She toppled, reverting back to her normal size, waves of residual energy causing her to wince with pain. The Lapras huffed, then closed her eyes in exhaustion, accepting defeat.[break][break]
"Nice work," Caleb lauded Tsubaki, then nodded with respect to her Arbok. He walked up to the young woman and extended his hand, a gesture of good will. "I meant what I said - if you want to train together, we can. I think Freya would approve."[break][break]
Tsubaki would know when to schedule it, should she take him up on his offer - she was the one who managed Freya's many commitments, after all.[break][break]
"I know you do a lot for the Councilwoman, but you ought to take some time for yourself, too."[break][break]
